Criminal Defense Attorney Robert A. Ladanyi

Former Orange County Chief DWI Prosecutor and with 29 years of practice experience, lawyer Robert A. Ladanyi has the experience necessary to defend you against all criminal charges. Located in Middletown, New York, our law firm concentrates on defending people charged with DWIs/DUIs, traffic tickets, and drug possession charges. In order to defend our clients better, we stay abreast of the latest developments in the science behind DWI and drug defense, and any case involving complex forensic evidence.

Mr. Ladanyi began his legal career in New York City at two Park Avenue firms specializing in securities work and corporate litigation.  Acquiring a taste for the courtroom, he left the city to work as an Assistant District Attorney in Orange County (Goshen) in 1982.  There he advanced to the felony unit, where he prosecuted complex cases involving auto theft rings before being named Chief DWI Prosecutor in 1984, a new position at the time under the State's recently enacted STOP-DWI initiative.

He supervised all DWI prosecutions in the DA’s office, handling the most serious cases (usually fatalities) himself. He attended numerous seminars and training sessions during that time, being a lecturer at some himself. He even took and completed the certification program for a Breathalyzer operator, becoming a licensed “BTO” (Breath Test Operator) “just to get some hands on” with the devices he was constantly employing in court. His two years of engineering training at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute proved to be an asset in understanding the technical aspects of such evidence, and in preparing expert witnesses, such as Forensic Toxicologists, Accident Reconstruction Experts, and Medical Examiners.

During his tenure as Chief DWI Prosecutor, he developed numerous contacts in law enforcement, and state agencies such as the State Police Crime Laboratory and the NYS Division of Criminal Justice Services, where he worked on a two year study project involving various aspects of prosecutorial technology and automation across the state.

He personally tried numerous cases in the DA’s office, at least one resulting in a seminal and still cited ruling in the area of blood sample preservation and admissibility. Upon leaving the office in 1986, he joined an established firm in Middletown, NY, where he handled and then expanded their criminal defense practice. When that firm dissolved in 1988, Mr. Ladanyi established his own practice as a solo practitioner, focusing primarily on criminal defense, particularly cases involving DWI and related areas, such as drug and contraband charges following vehicle stops.

Recently, he had occasion to handle a number of cases involving DWI Roadblocks (“Sobriety Checkpoint”), involving intricate application of Fourth Amendment Constitutional issues. He also handled many charges of Driving While Impaired by Drugs (Vehicle & Traffic Law §1192.4), involving complex medical, legal, evidentiary and toxicological issues. He continues as a sole practitioner, rather than adding associates to expand his case volume, because he values a one-to-one relationship with clients, believing that if he is hired on a case then he should be the one handling it.
